Q: Can I hook my TAILFIN System up to my iTroll unit?
A: Absolutely! The TAILFIN System comes with an extra switch input that you can use to connect your iTroll control head. If you order an iTroll unit from us, it will come pre-wired to plug right in. If you purchased your iTroll elsewhere, you will need to contact iTroll for an adapter.
Q: I used to have a tie-bar connecting my kicker motor to my main motor. Can I use that same bracket when installing my TAILFIN linkage?
A: In most cases, no. The tie-bar bracket sticks too far out from the motor to provide a proper pivot point. Connecting the linkage this far out will limit your actuator travel and result in shorter turning ability.
Q: Can the motor be tilted up with the system installed?
A: Yes, the linkage arm is designed to tuck in above the motor clamps and the rest of the system does not move. If your motor has a safety strap system, we recommend making sure the motor is pointing straight forward before trimming up down.
Q: Can the TAILFIN be used in saltwater?
A: Yes, the TAILFIN is rated for saltwater use. The components are all stainless steel or painted steel and all electrical connections use marine-grade, tinned wire and sealed-pin connectors.
Q: Does the TAILFIN control throttle?
A: No, at this time, the TAILFIN is a standalone steering system. It is, however, easily paired with the iTroll as well as a number of other throttle controllers.
Q: Can I manually steer the motor with the TAILFIN installed?
A: No, when the system is fully installed, the actuator cannot be back driven. We do include a quick-disconnect linkage option in every system which, if installed, would allow you to easily disconnect the linkage arm from your outboard and regain manual steering.
